Step 1: Deploying Nginx via Docker

With this, requests to /app1 and /app2 are routed to the respective services. No special configurations, no external load balancers—just pure Docker networking paired with Nginx’s robust routing abilities.

In practice, we’ve found that Nginx containers can be easily migrated across hosts without breaking configurations or routing logic. This aligns well with how our teams manage distributed environments under real-time constraints.

Step 2: Enterprise Storage with iSCSI & iscsiadm

Docker excels at running stateless containers. But what about persistent data? That’s where iSCSI comes in.

On a separate rack server, we’ve configured an iSCSI target. From the Docker host, we discover and connect using iscsiadm:

sudo iscsiadm -m discovery -t sendtargets -p 192.168.1.50
sudo iscsiadm -m node -T iqn.2025-06.ca.lab:storage1 -p 192.168.1.50:3260 --login

A new device /dev/sdb becomes visible. We format and mount it:

sudo mkfs.xfs /dev/sdb
sudo mkdir /mnt/iscsi
sudo mount /dev/sdb /mnt/iscsi

To persist the mount, we add it to /etc/fstab with the _netdev flag, ensuring clean boot-time mounts.

This is the same configuration we roll out to clients dealing with high I/O operations—especially in sectors like healthcare, eCommerce, and logistics.

Nginx, Docker & iSCSI

Step 3: Attaching Persistent iSCSI Volume to Containers

With storage mounted, we make it available to a Docker container:

Now the container writes data directly to enterprise-grade remote block storage. The key difference? Data survives restarts, updates, and migrations.

Next, we enhance the Nginx config. Out of the box, Nginx is fast. But we apply additional hardening steps:

  • Hide server tokens to prevent version leaks

  • Enforce TLS 1.2 or newer only

  • Enable secure cipher suites

  • Configure caching for static content

  • Rate limit and connection throttle for basic DDoS protection

These changes provide better security posture, eliminate trivial info leaks, and improve response times. After implementation, our lab test shows improved TLS handshake speeds and latency reductions on first byte.
